Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in volunteering!   We’d like to tell you a little bit about our upcoming volunteer opportunities and how to get started with us.

So…what’s ITEC?

The Information Technology Empowerment Center (ITEC) is a Lansing-based nonprofit that grew out of a collaborative effort between MSU, area schools, local government, community organizations, and technology companies.  We offer free or low-cost programs designed to get kids excited about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).   Fun, hands-on activities like Lego Robotics or Scratch programming teach kids valuable skills they can use to participate in today’s information economy.  See http://www.iteclansing.org/programs for more information about our programs.

How can I help?

Spring 2011:  We're taking applications now for volunteers who want to have fun teaching technology to middle school youth! Our greatest need is for volunteers who can commit to two hours per week between February and April assisting with our Lego Robotics, Scratch, or Digital Media Arts programs.  Take a look at the programs we offer and let us know what you're interested in doing!

Ongoing: Are you handy with a database? Do you love working on Web sites? Are you keen on sweating a little? We have plenty of critical behind-the-scenes stuff, too.

Do I need any specific skills?

A positive attitude, friendliness, and a desire to make a difference are important criteria.  We provide training.  Some background in computing technology (or a strong desire to learn) will be useful for volunteers who want to teach or assist with after school programs.
