Description

Dear Parents,

St. Stephen's Community Church is excited to announce that ITEC - the Information Technology Empowerment Center - will offer a five week, after-school class for Sixth through Eighth grade students in our new Community Learning Center beginning Tuesday, November 3rd.  This is a limited enrollment class (20 students) and pre-registration is required.

Using a new programming language called Scratch, ITEC is offering this innovative and fun course to help students become skilled in advanced computer technology through interactive storytelling and games.  Designed by educational and technology experts, the curriculum uses playful learning experiences.  With Scratch, students easily create their own responsive stories, animations, games, music and art - and can even share their creations on the web.

Collaborating with ITEC are faculty from Michigan State University.  Their goal is not only to enable students to create their own stories and animations, but also to help them understand the fun and science behind the technology of programming.  The result will be exciting projects that are generated by the students' own ideas, interests and passions.

Scratch is designed to stimulate young people (ages 8 and up) to develop 21st century learning skills and technical comprehension.  As they create and share Scratch projects, young people learn important mathematical computational ideas, while also learning to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively.

The Tuesday ITEC/SSCC classes will be held from 3:30-4:45 for five weeks beginning November 3rd in the CLC (Mobile Unit Two).  Snacks will be served from 3:00-3:30 in Mobile Unit One.  Open Lab time will be available to the Scratch students until 6:00 pm.

If you are interested in enrolling your son or daughter, please contact the SSCC church office.

Description

The parishioners at St. Stephen's strive to make a difference in the community by providing spiritual, cultural, educational, and social outreach ministries.  The church also has a great deal to offer its congregation of 300.  In addition to Sunday services, Bible Study is held weekly.

Founded in the fall of 1987, St. Stephen's began as an interdenominational church encompassing many varied religious backgrounds.  Our mission is to be scripturally-based, rooted in the African American religious tradition and to play an active role in the community.  In 1990, St. Stephen's became affiliated with the United Church of Christ, a progressive denomination that embraces and celebrates multi-racial, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
