The June 2009 Greater Lansing Business Monthly discussed exciting developments at ITEC and the East Lansing Technology Innovation Center (http://www.cityofeastlansing.com/tic)
Information Technology Empowerment Center (ITEC)
One day last year, Adam Pitcher, who lives in north Lansing near the then-vacant Holmes Street School, thought, "We have to find a use for this school." Being a systems analyst at Michigan State University's department of computer science and engineering, he also realized the growing need for education of K-12 kids, particularly in the realm of science and math.
"Out of that need," Pitcher, who is involved with the Holmes Street School Association, says, "I looked at what's around me and thought it would be good idea to start this project."
In another part of town and around the same time, Ryan Vartoogian, CEO of Spartan Internet, heard about a collaborative effort to restore the school. He approached the City of Lansing and purchased the building, which will soon house Spartan Internet's new offices on its third floor.

ITEC - Information Technology Empowerment Center of Lansing is a nonprofit, collaborative partnership between community, industry, and education. The technology center offers hands-on activities designed to teach science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) skills. MSU students have opportunities to volunteer at ITEC-Lansing or earn experiential learning credit, and MSU faculty conduct research on how technology benefits learning.

ITEC attracts students into science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields through hands-on activities and projects that are fun and innovative. Students explore programming, robotics and digital media in an environment where they can ask questions about how and why they are performing these activities. Students gain competency in and passion for STEM fields. During spring 2009, ITEC is conducting after-school projects in Lansing schools and at the Black Child and Family Institute, and will hold two weeks of ITEC Technology camps at Impression 5 this summer, funded under a grant from TechSmith Corp.

ITEC-Lansing will be housed in the former Holmes Street School in Lansing, Michigan, which is also the future site of the new headquarters for Spartan Internet Consulting Corporation.
